Mexico, Canada travelers will soon need passports

Us_passport_2It's gotten to be a bit like the State Department that cried wolf. But this time they say they mean it.

For years now, we've heard that officials were going to require passports or passport cards for land travel from Canada and Mexico.  And several times the requirement has been delayed.

Starting June 1, the requirement will be enforced, reports the Los Angeles Times. Because it includes land crossings, millions of travelers may be affected.

No telling if the change could be delayed again, but this much is clear: the time to apply has never been better. A combination of seasonal slowdown and economic duress means there's practically no backlog — now.

So go ahead and apply now. Too many times I've seen people scrambling to get passports at the last minute when a trip suddenly arose. Sometimes they've even canceled the excursion. Don't let that be you.
