Tour a busy North Carolina port

Morehead_port_mv_furness_londonNorth Carolina is more than pretty beaches, race cars and mountains.

It's also a busy shipping center. Morehead City's port, located about 100 miles northeast of Wilmington, handled more than 2 million tons of cargo last year. Ships send out everything from military supplies to rubber, with ships coming and going from India, Brazil and Indonesia.

Next week, on March 12, the North Carolina Maritime Museum in Beaufort, will offer a tour of the port, providing a glimpse of another hidden stop on the globalization super highway. Cost: $10 for a two-hour visit.

For some it will be a Tonka Toy fantasy with 100-foot cranes and cargo ships. For others, it's a nice boat ride offering a glimpse of the world economy at work.
