Seahorses sound like an elaborate April Fool’s joke.
Their courtship dance can last three days. The males become pregnant and give birth. And the species includes potbelly and zebrasnouts. (Shown above, a larger-than-lifesize dwarf seashorse, which tops out at just 1 inch long).
You’ll learn this and much more at a new exhibit, The Secret Life of Seahorses, at the famed Monterey Bay Aquarium. The new $2.25-million display includes 15 species of sea horses. The exhibit opens April 6 and continues through September 2012.
Since many seahorse species are endangered, the aquarium is breeding many of the animals, and acquiring others from certified suppliers.
The aquarium’s clearly excited about the exhibit, and is even giving away a private reception with the seahorses as part of a contest.
Still can’t make it to Monterey? You can at least Friend a seahorse on Facebook. Your new buddy: Herbie Hippocampus.
