Makeup can be tricky in the summer: humidity, sweat, and a cool dip in the pool stand in the way of your flawless face. Take a peek into my makeup bag for on-the-go, melt-proof summer essentials that can take the heat! Bonus: No brushes required.
Tip 1: Start with a base layer
My dermatologist recommended it and I'm hooked! This tinted moisturizer is a liquid-to-powder formula, meaning shine-free, smear-free, and water resistant. Plus, it's SPF 40 and unlike some foundations, it is made by a skin care line and won't clog your pores. Bonus: the formula comes in 1 shade and transforms to match any skin tone.
Tip 2: Add warmth
Giorgio Armani Cosmetics Fluid Sheer in Golden Beige, $59 (photo courtesy of Armani Cosmetics)
Another one of my best beauty buys to date. This sheer fluid has a liquid foundation-like consistency and comes in a number of flattering shades. Wear it alone or mix with moisturizer, sunscreen, or foundation for a subtle glow. The great thing about a liquid bronzer of powder is that it sinks into skin and won't disappear after hours of wear. Apply where the sun naturally hits your face: bridge of nose, cheek bones, and forehead.
Tip 3: Highlight
NARS The Multiple, $38 (photo courtesy of theztyle.com)
The Multiple is a constant beauty award winner. This all-purpose cream stick is the ultimate problem solver. Use it as blush, bronzer, eyeshadow, highlight, or sheer lip color. My favorite shade is the pearly Copacabana (far left). Swipe some on your brow bone, by tear ducts, and tops of cheek bone for a subtle shimmer that ins't too Tinkerbell.
Tip 4: Add a touch of color
Benefit Benetint, $28 (photo courtesy of bodyshop4less.co.uk)
A good tip for summer makeup is liquids, gels, tints, stains, and creams are usually better than powders. That being said, you can't find a more universally flattering, easy application stain. The word 'stain' normally scares people away, but it's foolproof. Just dab a little on the apples of your cheeks for a fresh, rosy wash of color. Bonus: Can't get enough of the stain? Try the Benetint lip balm with SPF.
Tip 5: Use sweat-proof shadow
Laura Mercier Metallic Creme Eye Colour, $22 (photo courtesy of Sephora)
Eyeshadows are notorious for creasing in the summer. Laura Mercier's waterproof metallic shadows are summer tested for whatever may come your way: surf, sand, or sweat. The warm metallics add just the right amount of sheen and warmth.
Tip 6: Amp up lashes
Maybelline The Colossal Volum' Express Waterproof Mascara, $6.50 (photo courtesy of Walgreens)
If you're in a hurry and need to minimize your normal makeup routine, at least do mascara and blush. They give the appearance of looking awake and refreshed– something that a Starbucks double shot can't do. This is my favorite drug store mascara. Two thick coats of this baby and you'll be good go.
Tip 7: Avoid raccoon eyes
Érciture de Chanel Automatic Liquid Eyeliner, $34 (photo courtesy of chanel.com)
Ever taken a dip in the pool and realized you came out of the water with a smoky eye that you hadn't come in with? A runny eyeliner can make you look like you were in bar fight the night before and recovering from a black eye. Liquid liners are the best problem solver for this dilemma. I love Chanel's because it has a built-in applicator and the brush is very forgiving if you don't have a steady hand.
Tip 8: Brighten dark spots
Yves Saint Laurent Touche Éclat Radiant Touch, $40 (photo courtesy of Sephora)
This magic wand is the perfect luminizer. It brightens skin and gives radiance to dark circles and sunspots. Just a few clicks of this pen brings life and light to tired areas. Plus, the sheer creamy formula is long lasting. I keep one at home and stash one in my purse in case I need a quick afternoon pick-me-up.
Tip 9: Plump your pout
Dior Addict High Shine Lipstick, $26 (photo courtesy of Sephora)
I found myself constantly fumbling around in my purse for my lipstick and gloss until this gloss stick came to my rescue. No longer will you be torn between choosing the color of a lipstick and the hydration of a gloss. Although this Barbie pink looks shocking, and more pop-princess than fresh-faced, the color goes on sheer and gives just enough pigment for a natural look. The high-shine formula keeps lips moisturized and hydrated from harsh sun.
Tip 10: Get an all-over glow
Too busy to be a sun goddess? Get the glow without the time investment. For self tanners, I prefer a mousse because the texture is lighter and less greasy than a lotion but unlike a mist, you know where you're applying. This 4 ounce option is great to tuck in a beach tote. Bonus: Buy the mousse and get their Beachy Babe Lip Gloss for free.
