Friday Find of the Week: Our 7 Favorite Fall Fashion Trends Inspired by the Coast

September 17, 2010 | By | Comments (1)

It's time to pack up those sundresses and chunky espadrilles and pull those cardigans out of hiding. Fall fashion has arrived. And instead of taking a turn for melancholy, monochromatic, Prozac-inducing designs it has remained reminiscent of the beach: loose, fluid, and relaxed with touches of subtle luxury.

BONUS: Check out our tips on how to pair each new trend with an existing item in your closet.

Trend 1: Camel and Gold Tones

This glam neutral goes with anything and stashes as much as a tote but with 2x the style. Take to     work with a black pencil skirt and ruffle-front top or for a fun shopping weekend with a cardigan and     flats.

Trend 2: Chain Embellishments

Pair with dark denim and a silk shell top for the ideal lunch date ensemble.

Trend 3: Splash of Animal Print

Spiegel Leopard-Print Buckle-Trim Ankle Boots, $49; (photo courtesy of

These booties spice up any basic– try skinny-leg trousers or opaque tights with a simple sheath dress.       Quick tip: animal print can become overwhelming fast, so only wear it in pops, not head-to-toe.

Trend 4: Light Leather Accessories

Raina Medusa Belt in Taupe, $215; (photo courtesy of

Cinch over a loose cable-knit sweater or a structured blazer.

Trend 5: Luxe Fabrics in a Laid-Back Way

J. Crew Velvet Ruby Jacket in Weathered Wood, $168; (photo courtesy of

We love the idea of contrasting a rich fabric like velvet with slouchy jeans and cotton button-down.

Trend 6: Long, Delicate Jewelry

Anthropologie River Bow Necklace, $38; (photo courtesy of

Don't stash your bold necklaces for the season. But there is something alluring about a dainty      necklace on a long chain worn with a structured piece like a fitted military blazer or a high-collared      blouse.

Trend 7: Metallics in Unusual Places

Alice + Olivia Metallic Faux-Fur Jacket, $396; (photo courtesy of

Metallics are popping up in the most unexpected places: woven in loose-knit scarves and dotted     through a faux fur jacket. To tone down the richness of the glittery fur, wear with black jeans and     crisp white shirt or use it spice up a simple little black dress for instant elegance.
