Jon Ervin, Visit South Walton

Jon Ervin, Visit South Walton’s resident expert on the destination’s 15 beach neighborhoods, has the scoop on things to see and do when you get here.

Why should I plan to visit a destination known for its beaches when summer’s nearly over?

Although South Walton’s 26 miles of turquoise water and sugar white sand are beautiful any time of year, late summer and fall may offer the best opportunity to enjoy all this destination has to offer. Our weather remains very beach-friendly throughout the fall, our beaches and restaurants are less crowded, and great seasonal rates are available. I’ve personally had the pleasure of touring Coastal Living’s amazing home in Rosemary Beach and highly encourage everyone who cherishes the coastal lifestyle to experience it for themselves. I guarantee you will leave with design and decorating ideas to use in your own home.

Speaking of decorating, can I shop for home accents in South Walton?

Absolutely! There are dozens of shops, galleries and boutiques for all tastes and price points. From casual to sophisticated, kitschy to upscale, shoppers will have no problem finding that perfect item to remind them of their time in South Walton. The only challenge is deciding among all the choices. To help you find shops and other places of interest, we recommend our mobile app, available for Android and iPhone users. You can access it at http://beachfinder.visitsouthwalton.com/.

Besides shopping and the beach, what other activities available?

South Walton is blessed with an abundance of natural beauty, which provides plenty of options for visitors. Active visitors can enjoy kayaking or YOLO boarding across a serene dune lake, hiking through state forest, bicycling along the 18-mile coast-hugging Timpoochee Trail, or golfing on one of several championship courses. Of course, all that activity can work up an appetite, and we’ve got more than 150 dining choices, from casual to white-tablecloth, offering everything from steak to burgers and seafood. Options for live music abound, as well, most of them free.

Does South Walton host any special events?

South Walton hosts a variety of culinary, cultural, artistic and athletic events throughout the year.  Whether your interest is golf, music, the arts, film or food and wine, there is something for everyone. These major festivals, in addition to the weekly events, are hosted by our individual neighborhoods throughout the year. A listing can be found at  http://www.visitsouthwalton.com/events

There’s always something to do in South Walton, but we also heartily endorse doing nothing at all, once you’ve found your perfect beach.
