Beautiful Bellevue Avenue in Newport is boutique heaven for fabulous gifts, quirky vintage finds, and even something special for your furry friends. Here are five of our favorite spots.
Sweet cashmere sweaters with oversize lobster and anchor graphics, patterned shift dresses from European designers, Jack Rogers sandals—this is the uniform of casual Newport, and Angela Moore is an unintimidating shop that lets you grab a slice of local style; angelamoore.com or 561/585-9800.
The Sea Star Collection
Eclectic and fun, this new arrival on Bellevue features everything from jewelry and totes to small decorative pieces for the home, such as bold place mats and mother-of-pearl picture frames; seastarcollection.com or 401/835-4440.
Newport Wine Cellar & Le Petit Gourmet
These two gourmet shops are ideal for hostess gifts (Russian caviar and vintage rosé wines). Newport Wine Cellar (401/619-3966) and Le Petit Gourmet (401/619-3882); both at newportwinecellar.com.
Calvet Paris 1937
This tiny atelier-like shop with its subtle signage has gorgeous new and vintage handbags from the famous Paris design house. Clutches come in luxurious materials such as alligator skin and Argentine leather, and are worth the investment—each bag is made by a single artisan; calvetparis.com or 401/207-5329.
This upscale doggie boutique supports local designers, including The Fair Lead leashes made of sailing line (crafted on nearby Jamestown Island), as well as dozens of locally made preppy collars and leashes; wag-nation.com or 401/619-3719.
Where to Stay
A former private mansion, The Vanderbilt Grace Hotel is now a luxe gem in the Grace Hotels crown and just a short walk from Bellevue Avenue. Summer visitors will love roof deck movie night with truffle popcorn. And the house cocktail created by mixologist Salvatore Calabrese—Grey Goose vodka, pear purée, and apple juice—equals a little bit of bliss. Rates start at $275; vanderbiltgrace.com or 401/846-6200. -Tracey Minkin
