Happy November, Beach Readers! After the warm, sunny South Florida setting of October’s book, we thought we’d make our way up the East Coast this month with a novel set in the winter white of the rocky New England coast. The book’s bucolic coastal setting (plus a little humor and a little scandal) makes it the perfect read to curl up under a blanket with over the Thanksgiving holiday.
The Good House is the story of Hildy Good, a lifelong resident of Wendover, Massachusetts, a fictional coastal town that boasts century-old houses, acres of farmland and rocky beaches. A middle-aged real estate agent, Hildy knows everything about everyone in town, including the dirt and scandal of residents new and old. While Hildy is successful in her career and prides herself in being the resident “townie,” she’s also struggling with troubled family relationships, gossiping neighbors, and a battle with alcoholism that she refuses to recognize.
Released earlier this year, The Good House has already earned a spot on the New York Times Best Seller list, and a film adaptation of the book—starring legendary duo Meryl Streep and Robert De Niro—is currently in the works.
The author, Ann Leary–that’s actor Denis Leary’s wife–gained notoriety for her first two novels, the poignant, funny memoir, An Innocent, A Broad, about unexpectedly going into labor with her son overseas, and the fictional novel, Outtakes from a Marriage. To read more about The Good House and Leary’s inspiration behind it, check out our author Q&A.
We’re thrilled to find out what happens to Hildy, and to unravel all of the secrets Ann dishes out in this small New England town. If you’d like to read along with us, follow this schedule to stay on track:
