You’ll Never Guess the Über-Coastal Secret Ingredient in These Happy Hour Sips

You’ve heard the phrase, “Water, water everywhere, and not a drop to drink.” The old adage refers, of course, to the vast, salty ocean, and it’s generally considered true—unless, that is, it’s mixed into your martini.

Ocean, meet Vodka. Hawaii Sea Spirits, a craft distiller based in Kula, Maui, has found a way to infuse its organic liquors with mineral-rich water sourced 3,000 feet below the Kona coast. Because the 80-proof vodkas are comprised of 60 percent purified, desalinated water, the ocean-sourced water is said to have great influence over the quality of the drink. Try it at home: Purchase a bottle of Ocean Vodka here, and then mix up one of these coastal cocktails:

Spirits aren’t the only things that go well with seawater. In August, Kona Brewing Company is launching a small-batch Golden Ale, inspired by Hawaii’s natural elements and made with desalinated seawater sourced off the Kona coast, giving it a light, crisp finish. For every pint sold, Kona will donate $1 to the Maui chapter of the Surfrider Foundation, which aims to keep our coasts and oceans clean. Learn more about the ale, and where to find it, here.
