How to Choose the Perfect Sofa for Your Beach House

A beach house living room is the ideal gathering place, and your sofa can set the tone when it comes to the overall look and feel of your home. Hamptons Showhouse designer and decorating columnist Meg Braff told us the 5 things you need to know when choosing a stylish, comfortable sofa for your beach house.

. Quality first.
If you’re going to splurge on one item in a room, let it be your sofa! Buy high-quality, classically styled upholstery, and you’ll keep those pieces for a very long time.

I love Lee Industries, the exclusive upholstery sponsor of the Showhouse, because they make an affordable, quality product.

2. Measure!
Don’t buy something that’s too big or too small for your space. Measure twice and then plot the dimensions out with tape. Don’t forget to consider the height of your ceiling — that’s the biggest mistake people make when buying sofas. They purchase a piece with a back that is too high, and it dwarfs the room.

3. It’s all in the details.
Customize your sofa to fit your style and room. Normally, the type of room dictates the style of sofa I use, and the ability to customize style and details is key for me. I tend to do different arms for different rooms. And because I have my own fabric line, I often create custom pieces with very specific welting, tapes and seams – Lee always gets the details right.

4. Sofas aren’t always one-size-fits-all.
Taller people need deeper sofas, but I tend to think sofas in the 38″ to 40” range will accommodate most folks. Some people like a firmer sofa, while others want to sink into their upholstery and be enveloped. Lee provides different levels of firmness and filling to create the comfiest-possible couch. And if there are no allergies, go with down pillows!

5. I look for upholstery pieces that are made in the U.S.A.
There is accountability in materials and craftsmanship that’s sometimes lacking when you purchase imported items. I like to know that all the things that go into making a product are safe, and given Lee’s focus on eco-friendly manufacturing, I know I can count on their products.

I always love choosing sofas that are comfortable. That may seem like a given but there are so many sofas that are just so not comfortable. I think many times people go for looks rather than comfort but is not that way for me!
