This Is The Designer-Approved Front Door Color Every Beach Cottage Needs!

October 4, 2016 | By | Comments (1)

Each week, we’re bringing you tips, favorite products, and Q&As with the designers in our Coastal Living Designer Network.

Designer Wendy Blackband is the creative half of the husband-wife duo behind Blackband Design in Irvine, California. Here, she shares her essentials for hosting guests at your beach house, her preference in the great island v. peninsula kitchen debate, and the front door color she can’t live without!

CL: How would you describe your style?
WB: My personal style is coastal bohemian with a British Colonial flair. It’s current, but it has history to it, thanks to a mix of new and vintage items.

CL: What are your beach house essentials?
WB: A fresh coat of white paint, sheer linen fabrics, accents of the sea, coastal artwork, jute and seagrass, rattan and wicker, shiplap. A drawer full of hats, sunscreen and sunglasses for your guests. And a Cuba Libre cocktail with extra lime!

CL: When it comes to kitchens, peninsula or island?
WB: I love a big island because the kitchen is where it all happens in our house. We have a family of great chefs, and everyone loves to share in the process of bringing the meal to the table.

CL: Favorite places to shop?
WB: I like small, intimate shops that sell one-of-kind pieces: places that feel comfortable, like you’re already home. Sometimes it’s just a feeling about a place. I love places with friendly people who have stories to tell and make the experience personal and fun and endearing.

CL: What’s your go-to dynamite front door paint color?
WB: We live on Balboa Island (in California) where there are a lot of great beach cottages.   People have a lot of fun with their doors around here: Ours is an old reclaimed barn-wood Dutch door, which pretty much stays open year around. And if I have to choose just one color, Benjamin Moore’s Spirit in the Sky is a really pretty, soft turquoise that works well with coastal homes.
