Each week, we’re bringing you tips, favorite products, and Q&As with the designers in our Coastal Living Designer Network.

Stepping into Manhattan Beach, California’s Waterleaf Home & Gift is akin to entering a watery wonderland: With ocean-blue textiles and pillows peeking from fresh, white shelves and seaglass-inspired chandeliers hanging overhead, it’s a soothing space that feels connected to the sea that’s just blocks away. The talented duo behind the shop, Jill Johnson and Suzanne Ascher, also helm a design firm, Waterleaf Interiors, known for gorgeous coastal spaces that run the style-gamut from classic to contemporary. Today, we’re getting the scoop from Jill on her favorite trend, her #1 piece of advice for homeowners, and her favorite coastal escape!

CL: What’s a design trend you’re loving right now?
JJ: My latest obsession is cement tiles. They can transform any ordinary space and make your home feel thoughtful and collected.

CL: What’s your #1 piece of design advice for homeowners?
JJ: I always tell my clients “function” is most important. While it’s important to have both form and function, design can always follow. It’s important to be true to how you live.

CL: Coastal destination of choice?
JJ: I have a love affair with Punta Mita. That’s where I keep my boat, too, so that’s hands down my favorite destination!

CL: Favorite places to shop?
JJ: Waterleaf Home & Gift, of course! And I just returned from Bali where I felt so inspired – so many cool little places with so much color.
