Each week, we’re bringing you tips, favorite products, and Q&As with the designers in our Coastal Living Designer Network

Birmingham, Alabama-based designer Dana Wolter is all about finding the balance between pretty and practical – and in a beach house, that’s a surefire formula for success! Here, Wolter spills her advice for homeowners, her beach house essentials, and the color she’s calling the new black.

CL: How would you describe your style?
DW: My style is classic with an edge. I like for a room to stand the test of time, but have uniqueness and details that catch your eye. Everyday elegance – rooms that are functional for everyday use, yet can easily transition for a party!

CL: What’s your #1 piece of advice for homeowners?
DW: Create a healthy home that has purpose and is organized. You should surround yourself with pieces you love and that work for you and your family. Every object should have a place, even if it doesn’t always stay in it.

CL: What’s a design trend you’re loving right now?
DW: I love that navy is becoming the new black. It’s a neutral that goes with so much.

CL: What are your beach house essentials?
DW: Great towels and linens and a selection of good paperback books!

CL: What’s your go-to statement-making front door paint color?
