Lindsay Bierman studied history and politics at Georgetown, and realized nearly 10 minutes into his first Capitol Hill job that he desperately needed a career change. After various unpaid internships, including writing Sotheby's real estate brochures, he ended up ghost writing for one of the world's most prolific architects, Robert A. M. Stern. That landed him into UVA's architecture school, back to Stern's firm for architectural practice, and finally into writing for magazines. Years of living in a 300-square-foot NYC studio overlooking a cheerless airshaft sent Lindsay packing all the way to Alabama to help launch Coastal Living. He quickly became enough of a southern gentleman to join Southern Accents, and, before he got too comfortable, he was tapped to staff and launch Cottage Living as founding executive editor. Now he's back at Coastal as Editor-in-Chief.
Style Director Heather Chadduck puts her individual stamp on Coastal Living style, from decorating interiors, shopping for products, travel, and entertaining. Fantasy dream homes include a cottage in Sag Harbor, NY and a hacienda by the sea in Santa Monica, CA. She resides somewhere between the two, in Birmingham, AL, in a seaside-inspired Mediterranean home where the fireplace is covered entirely with oyster shells. She loves a coastal road trip, especially when it entails driving on the wrong side of the road, and prefers an SUV so that there is plenty of room to gather antiques and interesting props along the way. Heather was previously Style Editor for Cottage Living magazine.
Assistant Features Editor Sarah Latta recently made the move to the sunny south from New York City where she worked most recently as an editor for RealSimple.com and Hallmark Magazine. Sarah is a self-described sun worshiper and loves being outdoors (which in her younger days translated to lots of sunburn and grass stains). Luckily, she's since gotten smarter with the SPF and also gained an appreciation for interesting people, far away places, and beautiful home interiors—a winning formula for her work at Coastal Living. When not typing away at her computer or interviewing fascinating people for stories, Sarah can be found decorating her apartment, reading the most recent best seller, or just dreaming about sun-smitten coastlines.
Steele Thomas Marcoux began her career as a journalist writing about drugs (read: covering the pharmaceutical industry for a magazine in Washington, D.C.). A desire to shift focus to her first loves--architecture and design--brought Steele to Alabama, where she has worked for Southern Living, Cottage Living, and Coastal Living. With an obsession for all things beachy, a strong sense of adventure, and a not-so-wallet-friendly predilection for sailor-chic fashion, this Pisces is thrilled to be spending more time near the water, even on days when "time near the water" translates to daydreaming at her desk.
Knowing that readers are short on time but long on desire for flavor, nutrition, and excitement, Senior Editor Julia Rutland dishes out pragmatism with style. Whether it's writing, food and prop styling, developing and testing recipes, or checking out the latest seafood restaurant, Julia happily multitasks in her magazine office and in her home kitchen. When not subjecting her friends and family to new recipes, Julia and her husband enjoy renovating their home and chasing after their two precocious daughters.
Although landlocked in Birmingham, Alabama, Kelly Tomas knows that life is best lived by the sea. She’s journeyed from California to Cape Cod and from Italy to Ireland in an effort to explore the world’s coastlines. She has much, much more to see, but happily travels most frequently through the pages of the magazine. When she’s not working, she can be found decorating her home (using a thing or two she’s learned from Homes Editor Elizabeth Beeler), planning her next adventure (courtesy of tips from Travel Editor Larry Bleiberg), and spending time with her husband and spunky Chihuahua, Ginger.
